Kids’ hair is always a delight. Often parents don’t want to cut it because they’re so cute and the curls are feared to be lost forever, cowlicks are loved rather than loathed, and the color is something that often changes as they get older.
When our daughter and son-in-law left their three children with the babysitter, they walked out the door recognizing all of them as they normally see them every day.
The sitter had plans to add fun to the evening.
She brought hair color for each of the three. Playful, whimsical, and fun. Crazy colors. Scarecrow yellow for Nolan. Brooklyn had rainbow hair to go with her wild makeup. Mason was decked out in Christmas red and green.

Having had their fun, the two older ones showered, washed all the color away, and became themselves again.
Nolan went to bed with scarecrow yellow and woke the next morning with neon bed head.
Not expected by his parents. A surprise. Fun, but he couldn’t go to school that way.
We all try on different styles of us. Some are impacted by influencers followed on social media. Others are affected by important people in their lives, folks who have helped shape the people they are. Still others are guided by their view of the world, what works and is acceptable and what doesn’t.
Trying to be someone other than ourselves is complicated. It requires careful attention to the details of our lives, something we will always find it difficult to sustain.
Jesus alone can give us the strength and purpose to become new and improved.
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17
It’s natural to desire union with God–we were created for that. We know intrinsically that life is more than what we settle for.
Much of the newness in life comes from His complete and unrelenting forgiveness. Our old lives of brokenness have been covered with His perfect life. So when we are seen by God, He sees the goodness of Jesus rather than our messy lives.
Does that mean we will live life perfectly? Absolutely not. But as we live with Jesus, our attitudes will change, our hearts will yearn for better, and no matter how much we blow it, we are fully forgiven if our hearts are honest before God.
The beauty is we get to choose our attitudes. People and circumstances can impact us without our control, but we choose how we’ll react.
We can make good choices.
“Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12
We can choose to be in relationship with God through Jesus. He gives us full forgiveness, but more than that, He gives us the power and heart to live differently.
Hair color comes and goes–take it from someone who works at it.
True change can be life long with Jesus.
