One Christmas Night

‘Twas the night before Christmas, throughout Bethlehem town,

No home, motel, or AirBnB could even be found.

The streets were all crowded with merchants, travelers, and noise.

To the point where the chaos bothered the girls and the boys.

The census was on, everyone there, individuals and packs,

To be counted and registered so they could each pay their tax.

King Herod wanted money for his palaces and pleasures

And felt no remorse over absconding with their treasures.

The people were weary of Roman rule and tyranny,

Their hard-earned wages were drained by political conspiracy.

But this night, in fields where shepherds watched goats and sheep,

Darkness fell silently, drawing each one there to yearn for sleep.

Then all of a sudden, a light shone radiantly bright,

And an angel of God gloriously appeared at a height

In the sky above them, frightening them with something not known.

The angel, with great calm, spoke with an authoritative tone.

“Don’t be afraid, I bring you good news you must understand

That will be a blessing for every woman, child, and man.

It begins with a Baby, a royal heritage born of humble means

Who has come to save all who will listen; He’ll make their hearts clean.”

Unexpected, without notice, all new and already misunderstood,

Jesus came to us, pure and holy, born to die, offering His good

For our mess; His grace for our burdens; His hope for our hopelessness.

Not a Santa, but Saintly, who gives generously for our neediness.

No ornaments or wreaths, no cards, garlands, or sweet treats,

But a wooden bed with straw with the cow mooing and sheep bleats.

He came in love for all, no matter who you are, what you’ve done

To give hope to those who hurt, despairing, are dejected, and are alone.

So on Christmas, when presents don’t satisfy and people bring strife,

Look to Jesus for hope, for to you He promises life.

Merry Christmas to you all!
