‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the town,
Folks were scurrying, shopping, all wearing a frown.
The pressure was on to get the best gift
For Auntie Matilda and old Uncle Riff.
The baking was started, but not nearly done,
Each batch that emerged, kids would eat every one.
The post office, packed with holiday gift mailers
Overwhelmed many folks who turned into sad wailers.
The elves were all stationed at the door of each store,
Ringing bells, smiling broadly and asking for more.
Christmas cards were strewn all over the table,
Awaiting the signatures and all address labels.
The tree was all decorated, with ornaments abound,
In spite of the fact that it had twice tumbled down.
School done for the season, it was Christmas break heaven
Except for the parents for whom no break was given.
Parties had happened for three weeks preceding,
And all would agree no more partying was needed.
Traditions were happening all over the place,
Some were wondering if they’d just get some space
To be able to breathe and enjoy the real spirit
Of Christmas joy that was supposed to be in it.
There were fewer nativities that were being displayed,
The focus on God made PC people dismayed.
We’ve lost “Merry Christmas” and replaced it with words
That say “Merry Everything”, which appears less a scourge.
Yet it doesn’t destroy the truth of the story
That tells of God sending His Son out of glory
To come to our world as a Baby, a King,
The fulfillment of promises that God would bring
To people on earth, who sought a new way
For peace and wholeness and heaven one day.
In the midst of the crazy this season can bring,
It is, in fact, the birth of the King.
Who’s promised to save our hard hurting hearts
And give us the hope of a brand new start.
So let me wish you on this quite holy season
That you’d find the hope in the very real reason.
The true gift is Jesus, so we won’t be apart
From God who does love us with all of His heart.
May your Christmas be filled with the true joy and hope of this season.
