Halloween was over a week ago, but I’ve been stunned by how many people continue to insist on playing “dress-up”. Or better yet “make-believe”.
With the national vote coming to an end, I have found it hard to focus because so many running for office have focused on the problems of the other candidates rather than the solutions they are bringing to the table.
I have no comments about any of the candidates. I will allow others to determine the character and integrity of the winners and losers; my hope is that individuals elected will choose to show up for their constituents with their words and actions.
When the kids dress up for Halloween, many of their costumes are creative and unique. We had a group of teens come by with snazzy clothes, each wearing wings–they were “social butterflies”. We had a variety of Ariel’s, some spectacular zombies, and some parents who partnered with their kids with costumes.
Halloween is meant for make-believe. Life is meant for truth and honesty.
Jesus showed up exactly as He claimed. He wasn’t a politician trying to convince people to follow Him. He presented the crowds with truth, offering them the opportunity for forgiveness and acceptance.
He annoyed the Pharisees because of His truth. The religious leaders wanted to stone Him to death because He told them He was the Son of God. He wasn’t what they were looking for in a Messiah; they wanted a military leader. When Jesus didn’t back down from His claim of deity, they wanted Him dead.
“‘The Father and I are one.’ Once again the people picked up stones to kill Him. Jesus said, ‘At My Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone Me?’ They replied, ‘We’re stoning You not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.’” John 10:30-33.
Jesus never lied about who He was. He never sought to fool people or compromise Himself. He not only claimed to be God; He performed miracles that confounded people. His ultimate miracle was conquering death itself.
World leaders today have to work to convince people of their value to their governments. It’s not unusual for individuals to exaggerate their good points and minimize their faults. Like children at Halloween, it can appear that some of these people are engaged in make-believe.
The One to trust is the One who never lied, who never tried to fool people by pretending to be something He wasn’t. Jesus claimed to be God, and He proved it with His miracles. “The proof is the work I do in My Father’s name.” John 10:25b.
Finding a Person of truth and integrity is a challenge in life. Finding Someone worth believing in and following is the ultimate challenge.
Interesting fact to consider–politics and politicians can’t save anybody.
Jesus can.
What will you do with Jesus?
