Let The Music Play

We had the incredible opportunity to watch a concert where Mozart’s music was performed at the Golden Hall of Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Each of the musicians was attired in garb that could have been worn by Mozart himself.

John has been a board member for a particular organization for the past sixteen years, and their international headquarters is in Vienna, They graciously invited spouses to also attend.

While I was able to visit some of the historical places of this beautiful city, I also learned what an impact this organization is making.

The highlight, however, was attending a symphony of Mozart’s work. Seeing the musicians dressed in historical costume transported me to an earlier time when music by the talented young composer filled music halls and opera houses. The fact that I’m a fan of classical music made this time all the sweeter.

Music speaks to the hearts of people everywhere. We have different tastes, choose different genres, but music is communication that gives words to our emotions and souls. It creates pictures in our hearts and minds.

One of my favorite books is “The Magician’s Nephew” by C.S. Lewis, the story that’s the genesis of the Chronicles of Narnia. It speaks of a great Lion, Aslan, who is the main character in this series. In this story, the picture Lewis paints is how Aslan sings creation into being.

“In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing. It was very far away and Digory found it hard to decide from what direction it was coming. Sometimes it seemed to come from all directions at once…there were no words. It was hardly a tune. But it was beyond comparison, the most beautiful sound he had ever heard….The earth was of many colors; they were fresh, hot, and vivid. They made you feel excited; until you saw the Singer himself, and then you forgot everything else. It was a Lion. Huge, shaggy, and bright it stood facing the risen sun, its mouth wide open in song…”

The Bible speaks of how God spoke the world and all that’s in it into being–the symphony of creation, with a voice and sound more majestic and magnificent than multitudes of instruments, bringing to life His delight in all He created.

God sings over us with the same joy and euphoria with which He created all things.

“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. he will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17

I enjoy classical music immensely, but it’s nothing compared to how God sees and enjoys me. It’s quite humbling to know that the God of all creation knows me and delights in me. Like a loving Father, He sings over me.

He patiently waits to sing you His song of love.

  1. Yes, I have learned that God is shy and waits patiently for us to come to Him. Your last line says it all. Thank you, Dayle.

    1. Thanks, El, for your words–He is patient. And that’s something I have to keep reminding myself of.

  2. How beautiful it must have been to not only hear the music but to see it as it might have been presented over 200 years ago. I love your comparison of the beauty of music to the beauty of creation. Neither will ever go out of style!

    1. It was beautiful and inspiring. And it makes me think what it would have been like to be present when God called everything into being, having never seen anything like what He did before. Awe and wonder. We all need more awe and wonder.
