Dancing Machine

Her favorites are many of the country greats from the 90s.

Whether it’s Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” or Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, Kolly is swinging her hips, clapping her hands, and grinning ear to ear.

She’s a regular dancing machine.

I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself, but when she hears the beginning chords of those songs, she’s on her feet, dancing her heart out.

I’ve been watching her this week while her folks are involved in meetings, and the music has accompanied us on walks. If we get bogged down investigating leaves or checking out newly dug holes, I turn on the tunes, and she’s moving to the beat.

I will confess I dance with her in the house. Nothing I would ever do in public.

What’s wonderful is her love for music this early in life. I sing to her before I put her down for a nap, and it calms her. For a moment. Before I actually put her in bed.

Music moves us. There are many genres of music, but from the beginning, music was a way to express our hearts and souls.

King David, who penned most of the Psalms, wrote them for the purpose of worshiping God. A man who made many mistakes but continued to love the Lord, his songs reflect the depths of his soul and longing for closeness with God. No matter what his life circumstances were.

“I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God.” Psalm 40:1-3a

Even in despair, David found comfort and hope in God, and it moved him to sing praise to the One who always had his back.

Our emotions are often the songs of our souls. It’s why some music is harsh and angry, and other songs are calming and gentle. We express our hearts in our music.

Kolly, at such a young age, has more joy than worries in her life. Her demeanor is often one of fun and enjoyment–unless she’s not getting her way.

We have a God who sings over us with joy because of His great love for us.

“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a Mighty Savior. he will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17

That’s the kind of music I want in my life. Listening to the dulcet tones of the One who knows me and loves me lavishly. Allowing His song to calm my heart on the hard days that we all have.

What music is your heart dancing to?

  1. Amen! Wow i love 90’s Country music. I listen to ‘Country Line Radio’ here in the UK and it plays a lot of 90’s country. Dayle i love this post and i bet it’s a joy filled house when those chords start to blast out?! 😀

As a drummer and guitarist in our Worship band, i just love playing and listening to music and using myself as the instrument to sing out praises to our Awesome God. I always read the verse below to bless me to…
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

    1. Steve, that’s one of my all-time favorite verses! We are His instruments of joy and praise, and our lives need to be filled with the fullness of Him so what we reflect is all Him. Thanks for your kind and encouraging words!

  2. A beautiful portrait of ‘more joy than worries.’ Oh, for the soul of a child to stay by the record player and hear the Lord’s tunes! He’s made us dancing machines! Thanks, Dayle. I smiled my way through this.
